Chapter 3

“The Falcon of the Forest” is what “Merlin Sylvester” really means. A ‘merlin’ is a type of falcon, and since falconry was hugely popular at this time, all of Merlin’s contemporaries would understand both what Merlin meant, and that he went by this nickname instead of his real name. ‘Sylvester’ comes from the Latin adjective ‘silvestris’ which means “wooded” or “wild” (in the fact that forests are wild places–the Romans really didn’t like areas that weren’t urban.) Merlin has a few other names, which we’ll eventually hear in the comic I think. Right now he’s just a cool ass falcon.
