Gobbets – it means “pieces”! You might think that hounds would tear one to shreds, but “gobbets” is a way more fun word. It appears a few times in the Forme of Cury, a book near and dear to my heart, as it’s the first cookbook in the English language, dating from the 1390s. A recipe for hare instructs that the hare “schul be hewe in gobbettys and sodyn with al the blod”, and a following recipe instructs hare to be “hakkyd in gobbettys”! Very fun.
